Encryption

If you need to keep PII on your computer because of your job or your research, you may need to protect this data with encryption.

Encrypting data ensures that when you are not using this sensitive information it is stored as meaningless and unrecoverable gibberish.

Some University policies, including the Social Security Number (SSN) Policy and the Computer Security Policy require that certain kinds of very sensitive data be encrypted when stored on your computer.

If you believe you must store sensitive data on your computer, please contact your Local Support Provider (LSP) to get help encrypting some or all of your data. SAS has licenses for a comprehensive encryption package called PGP Desktop available for your use.
