Using PII Safely

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly version

We all know that we'll never eliminate the need for the collection and use of Personally Identifiable Information at Penn. It's a byproduct of our teaching and research mission that this kind of data is created, collected, and stored.

That's why Penn has many resources, including this website, to help you better protect the data you do need to collect and share.

The SPIA process helps individual departments analyze their data needs and information security practices. If you need to consider ways to safely share information, see Collaboration and Sharing and My work requires PII. Finally, as always, your best source of information may be your LSP, who can give you guidance on safe data handling processes.
